Inductively-Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry

Inductively-Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP OES)

Analyte

  • Typically liquid aqueous samples
  • Solid organic or inorganic samples after micro wave digestion

Equipment

  • ICP OES Optima 2100 DV (Perkin-Elmer)
  • Mikrowellenaufschlussgerät Start 1500 (MWS Vertriebs GmbH)

Targets

  • Multi element analysis - qualitative and quantitative determination of metal ions, Phosphor und Sulfur

Application

  • Environmental analysis  - water- and effluent water testing
  • Trace analysis in core and sludge samples
  • Trace analysis in organic und polymer matrices
  • Determination of purity
  • Quality control

Measuring principle

  • Injecting a liquid sample into the nebulizer of the ICP OES
  • Introducing the aerosol into an argon plasma
  • Formation of atoms and ions at temperatures of 6000 – 8000 K
  • Complete atomization of the sample
  • Excitation of atoms and ions to emit  its characteristic radiation by the argon plasma
  • Spectral separation of the emitted light according to wavelength in the spectrometer
  • Identifying the elements on the basis of the wavelength of the emitted light
  • Quantitative information by measuring the intensity of the emitted light
