At the Wildau location, the research area Polymer Materials and Composites PYCO considers all issues relating to polymer-based lightweight construction with fiber-plastic composites and complex fiber composite components in multi-material design. The holistic approach includes not only novel designs, tailored material developments, structures and associated manufacturing technologies, but also the design of sustainable recovery and recycling strategies for end-of-life scenarios.
Starting from the development of specialty polymers and fiber composite semi-finished products, through the design of prototypes, to the planning and implementation of manufacturing processes suitable for large-scale production, all important lightweight construction competencies of the value chain can thus be represented under one roof, from monomers to energy-efficient high-performance composite components.
Our research building, which will open in 2021, has 2700 square meters of office and laboratory space. In the new laboratories and pilot plants, lightweight materials can not only be comprehensively characterized with the modern equipment, but also processed into highly resilient fiber composite semifinished products for highly integrated structural components. Thus, the prepreg technology center, consisting of a vertical and horizontal impregnation plant with adjoining microwave lines, forms the heart of the pilot plant in Wildau.
The construction costs amounted to 20.5 million euros. The total funding of 19.4 million euros was financed 80 percent by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and ten percent each by the federal government and the state of Brandenburg.
